Day 3 is over and games start tomorrow. The first 3 days have been all about development and now we get to see the girls in action. Personally, it can’t come soon enough. For some reason, this year’s U15/U14 camp is slower than previous one’s I’ve attended. I don’t know if it’s the training plan or the implementation by some coaches but it just seems slower. Today was especially slow for some teams as the girls spent seemingly half of the ice time listening to the coaches describing drills, demonstrating drill, running it once, re-describing the drill, etc. When talking to a few of the girls, it was mentioned that some of these drills were over complicated and these girls are pretty experienced. My suggestion is keep it simple, build complexity off basic drills, and keep the girls moving. If a drill takes 10 minutes to explain, it’s the wrong drill.
Anyway, the morning sessions focused a lot on skating and edge work. Backward pivots, quick turn drills with puck, full speed tight turning and shooting, and puck handling keep away drills. These sessions were single team on the sheet for 1 hour. The afternoon sessions were 90 minutes and were shared sessions with another team. The focus of the afternoon session was offense. 3 on 0 focusing on puck movement and center support with focus on positioning and angles. Other drills included drop pass, crossing, when to pass and shoot, etc.
Today there were more parents/spectators than in previous days, but overall there are much fewer parents watching the sessions. As an example, over the last few years it was extremely difficult to find a table in the upstairs viewing area where you could watch the practices. So far it hasn’t been an issue with between 15-20 people watching each practice. I fully expect the scouts (prep school mostly) to arrive in force for the games this weekend. There were a few D1 college coaches that arrived today but not many. We will see how it goes tomorrow but I expect a bigger crowd for sure.
The following are some photos taken today. As you may see from my photo quality the conditions are extremely harsh for taking photos. Weak lighting, netting around all the rinks, condensation on the glass, and fog on the ice all make for poor shooting conditions. The Pro photographers assigned to the event have strobes setup and shoot from the bench area where observers are not permitted. Funny thing is the pro photographers weren’t at the rink today and won’t be back until Monday. I guess they had a better offer for the weekend. After the photos, I’ve listed tomorrow’s schedule. Enjoy.

Will you be watching and posting the scores of today’s 14 games? I see you have the 15′s up but we would love to be kept up to date on the 14′s – well mostly the Royal game.
THanks
Carol, I did watch a bunch of the U14 games. Unfortunately my battery died and I couldn’t post real time updates via twitter. Games scores are on the USAH site a few hours after the games. I’ll bring my charger tomorrow.
Well we got some of them, thank you though, it is nice to have someone there watching and posting the scores for those parents who are not there.
Carol.
