Day 2 is a wrap. The day started off rainy and gloomy, cleared a bit mid-day, but returned sporadically in the late afternoon and evening. For the most part this didn’t hinder camp activities other than sometimes the girls got to ride a bus back and forth to the dorms vs walking. What the rain did was raise the humidity all around the area and inside the ESL complex. For those who have never been to the 4 sheet ESL in the summer before, they have an ongoing problem with sudden changes in humidity. What this causes is the glass around the viewing stands and the rink to fog up severely. It even causes a light fog on the ice at times. It’s not a big deal, but does hinder viewing and makes taking photos in a challenging rink even more difficult. Hopefully it will dry up in the next few days.
As to Camp activities today they stared out in the morning with a 45 minute full sheet team practice. Although each practice was slightly different most covered basic skating and edge work, puck handling, and passing. In one practice the team didn’t have pucks on the ice until 20 minutes in when they started puck handling and passing. The end of each practice typically ends with 5-10 minutes of small games (half ice or corners). After practice the girls typically do 10-15 minutes of cool-down either in the parking lot outside, or in the locker room area.
The afternoon ice session was a shared session (2 teams on a sheet) and lasted for 1.5hrs. Today the girls worked on defensive concepts, moving, passing, and approaching the shot by utilizing 1on1, 2on1, 2 on 2, etc. Everyone worked on containment within a small space using 1 on 1 drills, breakouts, followed by some small games or full ice 3v2, 2v1, etc.
In the evening, the girls had a lecture at the auditorium about USAH National Team Programs given by Katie King and other former olympians.
For those interested, here are some links to the photos being taken by the official photographer of the event. They have photos posted online already from Day 1. Link to Official Photos. Personally, I haven’t been taking too many photos yet but I did take some. Here are a few I took today:
