2010 USA Hockey Girls U17/U16 camp – post 2

Day 3 (Sunday) started out a bit overcast but it quickly cleared into a nice day which turns out to be a good thing because the MN airshow was in St. Cloud and the previous days weather didn’t corporate.  For the Camp, the morning practices started as early as 7am and continued to around 1pm.  The teams were on a sheet by themselves for about an hour where they worked on: Powerskating, puck handling and finished with small games.  Please note that while this is the standard practice objectives, many team coaches change the activities significantly.  I saw one team doing completely different things.  However, most of the coaches follow the program.

The afternoon practices were shared ice for 90 minutes and focused on attacking in the offensive zone.  Lots of movement throughout the practice with little standing around at any time.  The last 20 minutes was a controlled scrimmage.  The coaches would stop the game and instructed the girls when some blatant mistakes were made or alternative choices were available.  Very nice.

Additional activities for the day included off-ice training, team meetings and a lecture.

Tomorrow is game day!  Games start at 2:30 central and continue through 8:15pm.  I’ll try and tweet as many scores as I can but I’m sure USAH will be updating the website as well.

Impressions after Day 3:

- Starting to see more and more ice packs on the girls

- Everyone seems to be in good spirits and overall nobody looks extremely tired yet

- Competition between the girls during the practices is intense.  Lots of body contact.

I’ll post a wrapup of Game day with impression tonight.
